The last print edition of The Shelburne County Coast Guard was distributed on Jan. 26, 2016 after 119 years of publishing. The community newspaper merged with the Yarmouth Vanguard and The Digby County Courier to become The Tri-County Vanguard, which was first published Feb. 2, 2016. The Shelburne County Coast Guard’s website still remains active and features stories about Shelburne County.

Postmedia announced on September 21 that nine daily newspapers, including Ottawa Sun, would be cutting their Monday print editions effective October 17, 2022. Digital versions of the newspapers will remain available online. In early 2016, Postmedia announced the merger of the Ottawa Sun and the Ottawa Citizen newsrooms. Both newspapers continued to publish, but editorial staff work under one senior editor, filing stories and images to both publications.

The Northern Journal weekly newspaper published its final print edition on March 2, 2016 and laid off its newsroom staff. The paper, which operated for 40 years out of Fort Smith on the border of the Northwest Territories and the Alberta border, covered the Northwest Territories as well as the Municipality of Wood Buffalo in northeastern Alberta, including Fort Chipewyan, Fort McMurray and the oil sands industry.

The Community Edition

The Community Edition, which started as a supplement to the WLU campus publication, The Cord, launched in 2012. But, with a quick growth in following, the publication evolved, dropping "The Cord" from its original name (The Cord Community Edition) and building its identity as a monthly covering arts, culture and social issues. Now known well across Waterloo Region, The Community Edition (TCE) is supported by one full time paid staff person and volunteer contributors. It's funded by a mix of advertising revenue and event revenue from a single, annual arts event called "Steel Rails."
